It is not always possible to avoid becoming involved in a car accident. Anything can happen to anyone, at any time. It is common for people to act unpredictably and thus, unintentionally cause accidents.

There are some techniques you can use to help keep yourself safe from other drivers’ unpredictability. Defensive driving practices allow you the time and attention you need in order to remain protected on the road.

Driving Defensively

In general, defensive driving is a great tool to use on the road for the prevention of car accidents. Follow these guidelines to help protect yourself from the distracted drivers and other hazards on the road:

  • Stay alert. It is critical that you don’t drive when you’re too tired. Fatigued driving is just about as dangerous as driving under the influence of intoxicants. If you haven’t had enough sleep, let someone else do the driving.
  • Put away distractions. Keep your eyes on the road at all times. Put your smartphone on driving mode so you aren’t alerted of notifications while you’re on the road.
  • Leave plenty of room. It’s important to leave an adequate distance between your car and the one in front of you. A good general rule here is to leave as many car lengths between you and the car in front of you for every 10 miles per hour (mph) of speed you are traveling. For instance, if you are driving 60 mph, you’ll want to leave six car lengths between your vehicle and the one ahead of you. That way you’ll have enough room to slow down if you suddenly have to come to a panic stop.
