Preparing for California Fire Season

3 Tips for Fire Preparedness

All California residents, especially those in Chico and surrounding areas, understand the importance of being prepared for the annual wildfires. Although the fall is typically a peak time of year for these incidents, an unseasonably warm and dry winter and spring can increase risk throughout the state. Here are three ways your family can prepare for the season ahead.

#1. Create “Defensible Space”

One of the best ways to protect your home is to create “defensible space” by removing any dead vegetation or other flammable material within 30 feet of all structures on your property. You should also clear any items likely to catch fire, such as propane tanks, away from your home.

If you live in an area at high risk for wildfires, you may want to create a larger buffer zone of up to 100 feet. This requires more work but can provide extra protection for your family.

#2. Reinforce Your Home With Fire-Resistant Materials

You can also make your home more fire-resistant by reinforcing it with certain materials. This includes replacing any wood shake roofs with tile or metal, as well as installing double-pane windows.

It’s also a good idea to install ember-resistant vents or metal mesh screens in your attic and under your deck or porch. These will help to prevent burning embers from entering your home and starting a fire.

#3. Make An Emergency Plan and Kit

It’s important to have an emergency plan in place in case you need to evacuate your home quickly. This should include a list of local shelters as well as a designated meeting place for your family.

You should also put together an emergency kit with enough food, water, and supplies to last for at least 72 hours. Be sure to include any prescription medications, a first aid kit, pet food, clothing, and blankets for the whole family.
